How to Build a Search Business: Learning is easy. Discipline is everything

How to build a search business with The Search Standard

People often ask me what it takes to build a successful search business.

My answer has been the same for more than 18 years.

Learning the business is the easy part.

At its core, recruiting is simple. You're bringing talented people together with companies that need them.

The best part? The highest-quality candidates usually aren't looking for a job. They're already employed. They're successful. They're busy. Your job is to present an opportunity compelling enough that someone who wasn't planning to make a move begins to imagine a better future. That's where the best talent lives.

Execution is a different animal.

There are countless ways to recruit, and every recruiter eventually develops a style that fits their personality. My north star has always been the phone. I call the companies that already employ the talent I'm looking for. I find out who's in the seat. I ask for that person. If I don't reach them, I keep calling until I do.

Persistence isn't a tactic. It's the business.

Think about Bud Fox trying to reach Gordon Gekko in Wall Street. He didn't quit after one voicemail.

Most people don't struggle because they can't learn recruiting. They struggle because picking up the phone is uncomfortable. The good news is that discomfort fades fast. What remains is discipline.

Whether your commitment is 50 calls a day or 100, the real challenge isn't making one great call. It's making the next one. And the next one. Day after day. That's where search businesses are built.

The first six months are the grind. Grinding it out. The effort you put in during those six months determines your placements over the six months that follow. Every conversation becomes an asset. Every candidate profile becomes a relationship you'll own tomorrow. Every person who trusts you enough to share their story becomes a relationship you can build on for years.

Build ten candidate relationships a day, and after six months you've built a proprietary database of roughly 1,200 people in your market. Twelve hundred people who know you. Twelve hundred people who know other talented people. That's an asset no one can take away from you.

This business compounds — not because it's complicated, but because disciplined effort always does.

One of the things I love most about running a solo search business is that everything runs through you. Every call. Every relationship. Every placement. Every fee. Ownership leaves no one to pass the buck.

At the end of the day, there's one question that matters: did you give everything you had today?

The opportunity to build a search business is available to far more people than most realize. It doesn't require the perfect education, the perfect résumé, or the perfect background.

It requires discipline. It requires consistency. It requires the willingness to do the work long after the excitement wears off.

Learning the business is the easy part. The discipline to execute it every day is what separates professionals from everyone else.
